Annapurna Khayar Lake Trek

The Annapurna-Khayar Lake Trek is one of the most spectacular off-the-beaten-track treks in the Annapurna region. The trip begins at Nayapul after a one and a half hour drive from Pokhara. The trail ascends gradually, passing through pretty villages and agricultural terraces. At every village along the way you will be warmly welcomed by the local Gurung and Magar people. We typically walk at an easy pace so that you get plenty of opportunity to absorb the landscape and the local cultures that have changed little over the centuries.

From Tadapani we leave the main trail and gently ascend through the dense forest into alpine terrain and the village of Bayali. We may come across Yak/Nak herders with their animals. And you might have the opportunity to taste Yak butter.

The trail continues to Khopra Hill and then on to Khayar Lake (ultimate goal of the trip). Chop Hill provides magnificent mountain views. Nilgiri, the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri dominate the western skyline beneath them is the deepest gorge in the world, the Kali Gandaki.

From Khopra Hill the trail descends through open alpine meadows and forests of oak and rhododendron, to Swanta. From there we make our way back to Pokhara via Ghorepani and Poonhill.

1. Food: The Tea houses are run by family most of the trekking areas. In Annapurna-Ghorepani trail lodges offer the menu with diverse of western and local foods like Dal Bhat, MOMO, Spring Rolls,        Spaghetti, Chicken Item (Roast Chicken, Fry, and Grilled Chickens) and many items Potato based Items. But from Tadapani to Ghorepani the area is newly opened and each place has one or two          lodge only and the items on menu are limit. Most Lodge owners have been in the business for a long time and have mastered knowledge in preparing food under less then ideal conditions! They use      fresh vegetables, whenever they can bring from the Nearest Market Nayapul or Pokhara as well as pre-packed products. The milk along the trail is powder milk (added with water), always asks hot            milk and avoids any raw food or vegetable, fresh salad or fresh fruit salad; unless they have been soaked in iodine water or your hand is clean enough.

2. Water: you can fill directly from tap and use Iodine tablet or any other water purification tablets. You can buy the boiled water from tea house in the evening, morning or afternoon and no need to      use any purification tablet. That will not cost you much comparing bottle water. These days Steri Pen is getting popular and handy for use. It is very safe to use. Please don't drink water directly               from Tap or from Jar and stream, which may cause your stomach problem. Please remember; before you buying bottled water don't forget to see expire date.

3. Accommodations: on the trail, usually you will have double room with separate bed. Usually rooms are small. But plenty of space for you to move around and form matters with clean bed sit. Some    places have warm dining with centrally heated chimney at the lodge to keep you warm in the evening. Lodge owner always gives door luck. Don't leave the room without luck.

4. First Aid Kit and Medical Facility: Each of you should have own first aid kit with some general medicine that you know or prescribed by your doctor. Please don’t forget to take your medication        for whole trip. If you stop taking your medication or if you will not have full course medication, that you are taking, it may create trouble for you on the trek. Our guide have First Aid Kit with general    medicine for emergency and share with everyone including porters.

The nearest hospital in the area is in Pokhara; although villages like Ulleri, Ghorepani and Ghandruk have Health post for the villagers provides very basic information and health care

5. Preparations: You don't have to be a mountaineer or athletic to come to Nepal. As long as you are in good physical shape or reasonably fit, you do not require big hiking experience for short treks.    The time you put into physical training before you come to this trip definitely be rewarded. Every day at least an hour jugging and climb the stairs will help you a lot.

6. Weather: Weather in autumn season usually provides settled weather with excellent views. It gets bit cloudy towards the end of December leading up to the winter season. Usually in the morning sky    is clear and provides magnificent view and late afternoon gets cloudy is common in mountain valley. During the day temperature will be warm and you may feel sweaty mid day in lower section of          trek. But when you are in Ghorepani-Tadapani and Khayar Lake area, temperature drops a lot especially at night. The possible temperature at night will be 0 to -5C˚ outside room and during the day      time will be warm in sunny days.

7. Communication: Now in Annapurna area, most places have landline telephone service and your cell phone will receive network signal some places, if the weather is stable. There are internet café in     Ghorepani and Ghandruk.

8. Transport: There is daily local and Tourist bus service between KTM to Pokhara. The highway is good in our standard and travels thousands of local and foreigners by land every day. You can travel       by standard AC tourist coach to local cheap bus depending on your budget. From Pokhara-Nayapul-Pokhara we basically arrange private transfer, That can be Taxi, Van, Car or Bus depending on           group size.

9. Flight: Between Kathmandu and Pokhara have daily flights operate by different Airline company. The planes are much comfort and bigger then the planes fly to many mountain areas. Each flight           takes 20-25m depending on which airline you are. Try to sit on right from KTM and left side from Pokhara, will see absolutely amazing panoramic view of Himalaya.

10. Money & Payments: Throughout the trek, there is no foreign Money exchange facility. So you please change your money in KTM or Pokhara before us heading for the trek and if possible make          smaller bills.

Please do deposit U.S. $300 two months in advance. Your final payment is in KTM. We accept U.S dollar, Euro, Australian dollar, Singapore Dollar and Visa or Credit card.

11. Travel Insurance Policy: You most do travel insurance and that should cover Helicopter evacuation too. Comparatively the evacuation cost is very expensive and recently Helicopter fare is                  increased. According to new rate per hour U.S. $2500 and one time evacuation from Annapurna region will cost minimum U.S. $10000. We need to deposit the money before take off the helicopter      from KTM. Usually local trekking company pays the deposit to Helicopter Company and rescue Victim. You can pay immediately for trekking company once you arrived in KTM or Trekking agency            clams from your insurance company. Please do not forget to give me your insurance policy copy before heading to trek.
