Nepal Honey Hunting-Karapu Hill Trekking

Nepal Honey Hunting-Karapu Hill Trekking is an off-the-beaten-track trek in the Annapurna region. This trek is designed for those who are genuinely seeking wilderness experience, wanted to be off the main trekking trails and who like to see truly local people in their daily life and explore nature more deeply. This unique HHK trek offers a unique opportunity to see some thrilling honey hunting, natural beauty, pretty Gurung villages and stunning mountain views. Charming villages with terraced farmlands, dense forests, and high alpine meadows below the towering mountains of Annapurna II, IV and Lamjung Himal are some of the key features of this trek. The isolated traditional Gurung villages, their culture and daily lifestyle will definitely win your heart.

The Honey Hunting-Karapu Hill trek begins from Ghalegaon, which is 7-8 hours jeep drive from Kathmandu. Here you will experience the local hospitality of the Gurung people and a cultural show. Ghalegaon also provides spectacular mountain views of Manaslu, Himal Chuli, Ngadi Chuli, Lamjung Himal and neighboring foothills. The trail passes through several big Gurung villages including Bhujung which is one of the largest villages in the area with more than 400 households, from where we will go to see the awe-inspiring action of honey hunting for a day. The trek continues to the west, climbing through dense forest to the top of the Karapu Danda 3000m. Karapu Danda is the focal point of the trek and it provides absolutely stunning views of snowy peaks including all the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ngadi Chuli, Himal Chuli, Buddha Himal and Manaslu North. The trek continues further west to another large Gurung village Tanding located just in front of Annapurna II, IV and Lamjung Himal and our trip end at Lama Khet.

  1. Food: The Tea houses are run by family most of the trekking areas. But in Honey Hunting-Karapu Hill area hasn't developed Tea house, except Home stay facilities few places. So our trek is combination of Home stay and Tenting. We only use home stay three nights at Ghalegaon and Bhujung for night and that will be the opportunity for you to experience real local food prepared by local family and their hospitality. The families are well aware about basic hygiene. We organize fully camping trip with our own cook and kitchen staff. Everyday menu will be different; basically our cook prepares Dal Bhat, MOMO, Noodle Items, Spaghetti, Macaroni, different Bread items, Soups, many Potato base item, Rice and Curry item and hot Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolates. We use fresh vegetables, which we carry from KTM and buy along trail whatever locally available as well as pre-packed products. The milk we use on the trip is powder milk and we always boiled before we serve you. Any fresh salad will be washed by treated water.
  2. Water: you can fill directly from tap and use Iodine tablet or any other water purification tablets. We can provide boiled water three times a day. That will cost you nothing. These days Steri Pen is getting popular and handy for use. It is very safe to use. Please don't drink water directly from Tap or from Jar and stream, which may cause your stomach problem. Please remember; before you buy a bottled water don't forget to see the expiring date.
  3. Accommodations: At the Home stay you will have double room with separate bed. Usually rooms are small. But plenty of space for you to move around and form matters with clean bed sit and rest of trek, we will provide two men Tents with matters and Tent has enough space to put your things around. We will also provide you hot bag for the night to keep you warm and we will have communal dining Tent for dinner and Breakfast.
  4. First Aid Kit and Medical Facility: Each of you should have own first aid kit with some general medicine that you know or prescribed by your doctor. Please don't forget to take your medication for whole trip. If you stop taking your medication or if you will not have full course medication, that you are taking, it may create trouble for you on the trek. Our guide has First Aid Kit with general medicine for emergency and share with everyone including porters. Especially this you should have Claratyne (hayfever & Allergy Relief) for Bee sting Allergy.

The nearest hospital in the area is in Pokhara or Besisahar; although villages like Ghalegoan, Bhujung, Pasgoan, Singdi, Tangding and Siklis have Health post for the villagers, provides very basic information and health care
  5. Preparations: You don't have to be a mountaineer or athletic to come to Nepal. As long as you are in good physical shape or reasonably fit, you do not require big hiking experience for trekking in Nepal. But you need positive thinking with self confidence and strong determination to achieve goal of this trekking in Himalaya. Level of difficulty to get Honey Hunting side can be high then we expected. We might need to go through heavy bush forest, crash River and climb big boulders. The time you put into physical training before you come to this trip definitely be rewarded. Every day at least an hour jugging and climb the stairs will help you a lot.
  6. Rules in Honey Hunting Side: Local priest or head of Honey Hunter select the praying place near Cliff and keep as a holy place. About 5-10 meters area of praying place we are not allowed to wear boots or any kind of sandal except socks. Local believe to wear Boots or Sandals at Praying is unhygienic and we have to respect their believe.
  7. Dress to wear: Please bring more natural color dress for the Honey hunting day, especially Green or White and no black color.
  8. Safety for Honey hunting side: We provide Netting hat to protect your head and face by Bee sting. Please bring thick fleece Gloves.
  9. Weather: Weather in autumn season usually provides settled weather with excellent views. It gets bit cloudy towards the end of December leading up to the winter season. Usually in the morning sky is clear and provides magnificent view and late afternoon gets cloudy is common in mountain valley. During the day temperature will be warm and you may feel sweaty mid day in lower section of trek. But when you are in Ghorepani-Tadapani area, temperature drops a lot especially at night. The possible temperature at night will be 0 to -5C˚ outside room and during the day time will be warm in sunny days.
  10. Communication: Now in Annapurna area, most places have landline telephone service and your cell phone will receive network signal some places, if the weather is stable.
  11. Transport: There is daily local bus service between KTM to Basisahr. But from Besisahr to Ghalegoan no direct bus service and the road also not pied. The highway between KTM and Besihasar is good in our standard and travels thousands of local and foreigners by land every day. We arrange 4 wheel Jeep from KTM to Ghalegoan and Fly back to KTM from Pokhara.
  12. Flight: Between Kathmandu and Pokhara have daily flights operate by different Airline Company. The planes are much comfort and bigger than the planes fly to many mountain areas. Each flight takes 20-25m depending on which airline you are. Try to sit on right from KTM and left side from Pokhara, will see absolutely amazing panoramic view of Himalaya.
  13. Money & Payments: Throughout the trek, there is no foreign Money exchange facility. So you please change your money in KTM or Pokhara before us heading for the trek and if possible make smaller bills. Please do deposit U.S. $300 two months in advance. Your final payment is in KTM. We accept U.S dollar, Euro, Australian dollar, Singapore Dollar and Visa or Credit card.

Comparatively the evacuation cost is very expensive and recently Helicopter fare is increased. According to new rate per hour U.S. $2500 and one time evacuation from Annapurna region will cost minimum U.S. $10000. We need to deposit the money before take off the helicopter from KTM.
