Tamang Heritage Langtang Valley Trek

The Tamang Heritage-Langtang Trekking is a new and exciting trekking route in the Langtang area. This trail is newly designed for trekkers, and will take you through areas of unforgettable natural beauty. There magnificent views of snow-capped mountains, such as Langtang Lirungs, Ganesh Himal, Paldor peak, Shringi Himal, Manaslu and Sanjen Himal. Trekkers will be warmly welcomed and facilitated by the local Tamang and Tibetan people. The Tamangs are one of largest ethnic groups in Nepal, and generally live in villages at higher elevations. Their main occupations are sheep and yak herding, and the growing of some hardy grains and vegetables. Their daily life activities include raising livestock, tending crops, and carrying out small scale trade with the Kerung people of Tibet. They also make baskets and mats from mountain bamboo to support their daily life.

Tamang Heritage-Langtang Trek begins from Shyaphrubesi after a 7-8 hour jeep or bus drive from Kathmandu. The trek goes through beautiful alpine terrain, typical mountain villages, summer pastures, and forests. After the Tamang Heritage section, the trail continues to Langtang valley, up to Kyanjing Gompa (the last village of the area). The Langtang valley is a grazing paradise for yak and nak. From Kyanjin Ri (at 4770m) the best view point in the Langtang region) you can see many snow-capped mountains, including Langtang Lirung (7252m), Yabra Himal (6305m), Yala Peak (5500m), Dorji Lakpa (6990m), Naya Kanga (5846m), and Gangchenpo (6378m).

1.     Food: The Tea houses are run by family most of the trekking areas. In Tamang Heritage Trail is newly opened for trekkers and even though they offer menu with western and local food, they are not good enough to prepare all those food. We will have staff, who look after the food preparation and help lodge owner and Langtang area lodges offer the menu with diverse of western and local foods like Dal Bhat, MOMO, Spring Rolls, Spaghettis and many Potato based Items. They use fresh vegetables, whenever they can bring from the Shyaphru besi, Dunche or from Kathmandu as well as pre-packed products. The milk along the trail is powder milk (added with water), always asks hot milk and avoids any raw food or vegetable, fresh salad or fresh fruit salad; unless they have been soaked in iodine water or your hand is clean enough.

2.     Water: You can fill directly from tap and use Iodine tablet or any other water purification tablets and these days Steri-pen is becoming handier. You can buy the boiled water from tea house in the evening, morning or afternoon and no need to use any purification tablet. That will not cost you much comparing bottle water. Please don't drink water directly from Tap or from Jar and stream, which may cause your stomach problem. Please remember; before you buying bottled water don't forget to see expire date.

3.     Accommodations: on the trail, usually you will have double room with separate bed. Usually rooms are small. But plenty of space for you to move around and form Matters with clean bed sit. Most lodges have warm dining with centrally heated chimney to keep you warm in the evening. Lodge owner always gives door luck. Don't leave the room without luck.

4.     First Aid Kit and Medical Facility: Each of you should have own first aid kit with some general medicine that you know or prescribed by your doctor. Please don't forget to take your medication for whole trip. If you stop taking your medication or if you will not have full course medication, that you are taking, it may create trouble for you on the trek. I do have First Aid Kit with general medicine for emergency and share with everyone including porters.

There is hospital in Dunche and small health post in the villages like Ghatlang, Thuman and Langtang provides very basic information and health care for villagers.

5.     Weather: Weather in spring is Haze and Clouds build up from afternoon and afternoon rain is common in late spring. But usually in the morning sky is clear and provides magnificent view of the mountain. During the day temperature will be warm and you may feel sweaty mid day in lower section of trek. But when we cross above 3000m temperature drops a lot especially at night. Around Langtang or Kyanjin Gompa will be -5 to -10C˚ outside room and during the day time will be warm in sunny day.

6.     Preparations: You don't have to be a mountaineer or athletic to come to Nepal. As long as you are in good physical shape or reasonably fit, you do not require big hiking experience for short treks. The time you put into physical training before you come to this trip definitely be rewarded. Every day at least an hour jugging and climb the stairs will help you a lot.

7.     Communication: Now in Langtang and Tamang Heritage region most places have landline telephone service with national and international call and your cell phone will receive network signal some place if weather is stable. But above Lama Hotel no cell phone signal. Shyaphrubesi has internet facility.

8.     Transport: There are daily local bus services KTM/Dunche/ Shyaphrubesi. At least three Buses to Dunche and two in Shyaphrubesi. The highway will be newly pied from Tirsuli to Shyaphrubesi and much wider then between KTM to Tirsuli. We will have reserved Bus or Jeep depending on group size.

9.     Money & Payments: Throughout the trek, there is no foreign Money exchange facility except Dunche and Shyaphrubasi. So you should change your money in KTM and if possible make smaller bills. Please do deposit U.S. $300 two months in advance. Your final payment is in KTM. We accept U.S dollar, Euro, Australian dollar, Singapore Dollar and Credit card.

10.  Travel Insurance Policy: You most do travel insurance and that should cover Helicopter evacuation too. Comparatively the evacuation cost is very expensive and recently Helicopter fare is increased. According to new rate per hour U.S. $2500 and one time evacuation from Langtang region will cost minimum U.S. $5000. We need to deposit the money before take off the helicopter from KTM. Usually local trekking company pays the deposit to Helicopter Company and rescue Victim. You can pay immediately to the trekking company once you arrived in KTM or Trekking agency clams from your insurance company. Please do not forget to give us your insurance
