Tsum Valley Trek

The Tsum Valley Trekking is a sacred hidden valley in the Nepal Himalaya, situated in the north of the Gorkha district. The name Tsum comes from the Tibetan word Tsombo, meaning vivid colors. According to Buddhists, the Tsum Valley is known as the Beyul, the holy hidden valley of happiness, first described by Guru Rimpoche (Padmasambhava) in the eighth century.

This magnificent valley is surrounded by the majestic Himalayan peaks of the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges. It is a region rich in ancient art, culture and religion. Centuries old monasteries, mani walls and stupas lend the area a lost-in-time quality. The famous Buddhist saint Milarepa is believed to have meditated in the caves of these mountains.

The Tsum Valley Trek begins in Arughat after a 6-7 hour jeep drive from Kathmandu. The trail follows the Budigandaki river valley, passing through charming Chhetri, Braman and Gurung villages.

As we ascend the view slowly opens up to reveal the peaks of the Sringi Himal. At Nyak Phedi we leave the main trail which follows the Budigadaki river valley towards Larke Pass. We travel north-east following the Siyar river valley, continuing on to the beautiful valley to Mu Gompa, one of the most famous monasteries in the area. We pass several picturesque Tibetan settlements and monasteries, and there are spectacular mountains views around every corner. The return trail basically following trail one the way up to Arughat.

  1. Food: The tea houses are run by family most of the trekking areas. But in Manaslu Region especially Upper Tsum valley just started to open the Guest Houses and the trail is not as popular as other major trekking areas. So they are under learning phase of western food preparation even though they offer entire food on the menu. Because of inconvenient of Accommodations and Food preparation. We organize fully camping trip with own cook and Kitchen staff. Everyday menu will be different; basically they prepare Dal Bhat, MOMO, Noodle Items, Spaghetti, Macaroni, different bread Items, Soups, Many Potato base Item, Rice and Curry Item and Hot tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolates. We use fresh vegetables, which we carry from KTM and buy along trail whatever locally available as well as pre-packed products. The milk we use on the trip is powder milk and we always boiled before serve you. Any fresh salad will be wash by treated water.
  2. Water: you can fill directly from tap and use Iodine tablet or any other water purification tablets. We will provide boiled water three times a day evening, morning or afternoon and no need to use any purification tablet. These days Steri Pen is getting popular and handy for use. It is very safe to use. Please don't drink water directly from Tap or from Jar and stream, which may cause your stomach problem. Please remember; before you buying bottled water don't forget to see expire date.
  3. Accommodations: We will provide two men Tents and form matters and Tent has enough space to put your things around. We will also provide you hot bag for the night to keep you warm and we will have communal dining Tent for dinner and Breakfast.
  4. First Aid Kit and Medical Facility: Each of you should have own first aid kit with some general medicine that you know or prescribed by your doctor. Please don't forget to take your medication for whole trip. If you stop taking your medication or if you will not have full course medication, that you are taking, it may create trouble for you on the trek. Our guide has First Aid Kit with general medicine for emergency and share with everyone including porters.
  5. The nearest hospital in the area is in Arughat; although villages like Philim, Samagaon and Dharapani have Health post for the villagers provides very basic information and health care
  6. Preparations: You don't have to be a mountaineer or athletic to come to Nepal. As long as you are in good physical shape or reasonably fit, you do not require big hiking experience for short treks. The time you put into physical training before you come to this trip definitely be rewarded. Every day at least an hour jugging and climb the stairs will help you a lot.
  7. Weather: Weather in autumn season usually provides settled weather with excellent views. It gets bit cloudy towards the end of December leading up to the winter season. Usually in the morning sky is clear and provides magnificent view and late afternoon gets cloudy is common in mountain valley. During the day temperature will be warm and you may feel sweaty mid day in lower section of trek. But when you are in Ghorepani-Tadapani area, temperature drops a lot especially at night. The possible temperature at night will be 0 to -5C˚ outside room and during the day time will be warm in sunny days.
  8. Communication: Now in Manaslu-Tsum Valley area, most places have landline telephone service with national and International call service and your cell phone will receive network signal some places, if the weather is stable.
  9. Transport: There is daily local bus service between KTM and Arughat. The highway is good in our standard from Kathmandu to Dhadingbasi. But from Dhadingbesi to Arughat is dirt road and bit bumpy. We always concern about your comfort. So we provide reserved Bus or 4 wheel Jeep both way.
  10. Money & Payments: Throughout the trek, there is no foreign Money exchange facility. So you please change your money in KTM or Pokhara before us heading for the trek and if possible make smaller bills. Please do deposit U.S. $300 two months in advance. Your final payment is in KTM. We accept U.S dollar, Euro, Australian dollar, Singapore Dollar and Visa or Credit card.
  11. Travel Insurance Policy: You most do travel insurance and that should cover Helicopter evacuation too. Comparatively the evacuation cost is very expensive and recently Helicopter fare is increased. According to new rate per hour U.S. $2500 and one time evacuation from Manaslu region will cost minimum U.S. $10000. We need to deposit the money before take off the helicopter from KTM. Usually local trekking company pays the deposit to Helicopter Company and rescue Victim. You can pay immediately for trekking company once you arrived in KTM or Trekking agency clams from your insurance company. Please do not forget to give me your insurance policy copy before heading to trek.
