Nagarjuna (Jamachowk) Hill is a historically and religiously very important place for both Hindus and Buddhista alike. It is located north-west of the Kathmandu valley, approximately 2100m above sea level and it is as a part of Shivapuri National Park. According to etymology, the name as Nagarjuna is based in a mythological belief that it is the location where Acharya Nagarjuna meditated. The site is also described as Vindya Mountain in Buddhist literatures. Here one can feel peace state of mind with natural setting and it’s one of the best places to meditate.
The Nagarjuna day hike begins from Shivapuri National Park gate, which is about 7km from the tourist center of Thamel. We reach there by short drive and approximately three- hour walk through the forest. The walk is an absolutely wonderful hiking experience and you may encounter with some wildlife and see many different varieties of birds. After a steep three-hour climb, we reach the top of the hill, from where you can see incredible Himalayan views, the Kathmandu valley, beautiful scenery of surrounding hills and valleys. It is also famous for pilgrimage, where every day hundreds of devotees circle the old Buddhist Stupa, the hidden cave and monastery. We return to the same place and drive back to your hotel.
Day-1: Departure from Hotel 7:30AM by Car, Van or Bus to Shivapuri National Park gate near Balaju bypass. From there we start our hiking, after long steep climb approximately 3 hours; we reach to top of the Nagarjuna. Enjoy the breathtaking view; have lunch there and return to the same gate where we started the hiking and drive back to Hotel. Time 6-7 hours.
