Thorong Peak (Khatung Kang)

Thorong Peak is a beautiful trekking peak located north of the main Annapurna mountain range, to the south of Thorong Pass. It is possible to climb this 6000m peak while doing the famous Annapurna Circuit trek

The peak we climb is clearly visible from our base camp at Thorong-La. We reach the summit by traveling south from base camp. It is a physically challenging and quite technically difficult climb. Before we ascend we spend two days at base camp, resting and being trained in the use of climbing equipment.

The summit of Thorong Peak provides stunning views of Mt. Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, the Dhaulagiri range, the Annapurnas, and the trans-Himalayan valley of Mustang.

Note: There is no detailed information on the height and name of this peak on available maps. The maps you can buy show, south of Thorong-La, the mountain of Khatung Kang (6,484m), the top of which is just visible from thorong pass. The peak we climb is the false summit of Khatung Kang. We estimate its altitude to be around 6,100m. Climbers ascend to this false summit only. As far as we know, no one has climbed the actual summit of Thorong Peak, further to the south.

After our summit we descend into the Kaligandaki valley and the dry but beautiful lower Mustang region. Towns here include Muktinath and Kagbeni. In Muktinath we visit a sacred temple where Hindus, Buddhists and Bon practitioners all still worship, a great example of modern day religious tolerance.

Our trek ends at Jomsom, from which daily flights leave for Pokhara.
