Honey Hunting is an age-old traditional practice in the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal. The country is very rich in honeybee diversity. There are at least five different honeybee species in different parts of the country. These Honeybees play a vital role in pollinating mountain crops and wild flora.

Honey Hunting is a tradition is practicing for hundreds of years. And the practice is passed from one generation to another. The basic method of lighting a smoking fire under the beehives to drive the bees from the combs appears to be universal. However, cultural and spiritual practices carried out before harvest the honey is unique from one community to another.

Our Honey Hunting Trek in Nepal is exceptional to learn the old tradition. This trip is designed for those who are seeking a wilderness experience and want to do off-the-beaten activities. The trip offers the thrilling action of honey harvesting from the overhanging cliffs, natural beauty, typical Gurung villages, and stunning views of the towering Mt. Annapurna II, IV, Lamjung Himal, and Manaslu.

The bees are not in our control. We have to go where they are and that is unpredictable. We only know the harvesting site a day before. It might be a long way from the village and remote and seriously difficult area or nearby. We all need to be ready for some serious work. And will grave the opportunity to see an ancient tradition being practice as that has been for hundreds of years. It will be a memory you cherish and a story you will tell for years.

The Honey Hunting Trek begins from Kathmandu. We travel to Ghalegaon by overland. Ghalegaon is located on a hilltop that provides spectacular mountains views. Here you will experience the hospitality of the Gurung people and a cultural show. From there we head to Bhujung village, which is one of the largest villages in the area with more than 400 households. Bhujung will be our base for the Honey Harvesting excursions.

Trip FAQs

Food:  The tea houses are run by families in most trekking areas, but in the Honey Hunting Trek area, tea houses haven’t been developed, except for homestay facilities. During our trip, we will be staying in homestays at Ghalegaon and Bhujung. This will be an opportunity for you to experience real local food prepared by a local family and enjoy their hospitality. The families are well aware of basic hygiene. The food menu will include Dal Bhat, MOMO, instant noodles, local bread, soups, some potato-based items, and hot tea/coffee. The vegetables are fresh and locally grown, with some brought from Kathmandu too. The milk they use on the trip is powder milk, and they always boil it before serving you.

Water: You can fill the water directly from the tap and use an Iodine tablet or any other water purification tablet. The family can provide boiled water and that will cost you nothing. These days Steri Pen is getting popular and handy for use. It is very safe to use. Please don’t drink water directly from a Tap or from a Jar and stream, which may cause your stomach problems. Please remember; before you buy bottled water don’t forget to see the expiring date.

Accommodations:  At the Homestay, you will have a common private with two separate beds. Usually, rooms are small. But plenty of space for you to move around and form matterss with a clean bedsit.

First Aid Kit and Medical Facility:  Each of you should have your own first aid kit with some general medicine that you know or prescribed by your doctor. Please don’t forget to take your medication for the whole trip. If you stop taking your medication or if you will not have the full course of medication, that you are taking, it may create trouble for you on the trek. Our guide has a First Aid Kit with general medicine for emergencies and to share with everyone including porters. Especially this you should have Claratyne (hayfever & Allergy Relief) for Bee Sting Allergy. The nearest hospital in the area is in Pokhara or Besisahar.

Preparations: You don’t have to be a mountaineer or athlete to visit Nepal. As long as you are in good physical shape or reasonably fit, you do not require a big hiking experience for trekking in Nepal. But you need positive thinking with self-confidence and strong determination to achieve the goal of this trip to the Himalayas. The level of difficulty to get the Honey Hunting site can be higher than we expected. We might need to go through the heavy bush forest, crash the River and climb big boulders. The time you put into physical training before you come on this trip definitely be rewarded. Every day at least an hour of jogging and climbing the stairs will help you a lot.

Rules in Honey Hunting Side: The local priest or head of Honey Hunter selects the praying place near Cliff and keeps it as a holy place. About 5-10 meters area of the praying place we are not allowed to wear boots or any kind of sandals except socks. Locals believe to wear Boots or Sandals at a Praying place is unhygienic and we need to respect their beliefs

Dress to wear: Please bring a more natural color dress for the Honey hunting day, especially Green or White, and no black color.

Safety for Honey hunting site: We provide a Netting hat to protect your head and face by Bee stings. Please bring thick fleece Gloves.

Weather: Weather in the autumn season usually provides settled weather with excellent views. It gets a bit cloudy towards the end of December leading up to the winter season. Usually in the morning sky is clear and provides a magnificent view and late afternoon gets cloudy is common in mountain valleys. During the day temperature will be warm and you may feel sweaty mid-day. The possible temperature at night will be -0 C˚ outside the room and during the daytime will be warm on sunny days.

Communication: Now in the Annapurna area, most places have landline telephone service and your cell phone will receive network signals in some places if the weather is stable.

Transport: There is a daily local bus service between KTM to Basisahr and no direct service to Ghalegaon from Kathmandu. The highway between KTM and Besihasar is good in our standard and travels thousands of locals and foreigners by land every day. We arrange the 4-wheel Jeep KTM-Ghalegoan-KTM.

Money & Payments: Throughout the trek, there is no foreign Money exchange facility. So please change your money in KTM before heading for the trip and if possible make smaller bills. We require a 20% deposit of the total trip cost two months before your trip starts to confirm your reservation. The remainder of the payment must be made on your arrival in Kathmandu. We accept the U.S. dollar, Euro, Australian dollar, Singapore Dollar, and Visa or Credit card.

Travel Insurance Policy: You must do travel insurance and that should cover Helicopter evacuation too. Comparatively, the evacuation cost is very expensive and recently Helicopter fare is increased. According to the new rate per hour, U.S. $2500, and one-time evacuation from the Annapurna region will cost a minimum of U.S. $10000. We need to deposit the money before taking off the helicopter from KTM. Usually, the local trekking company pays the deposit to the Helicopter Company and rescues the Victim. You can pay immediately for a trekking company once you arrive in KTM or Trekking agency claims from your insurance company. Please do not forget to give me your insurance policy copy before heading to trek.

Staff Welfare: We are committed to the welfare of our staff, including trip leaders/guides, assistance guides, cooks, and porters. We ensure good wages, proper insurance, and the necessary clothing for all associated staff. They are the backbone of the adventure industry in Nepal. In Nepal, it is customary to tip field staff at the end trip as a token of gratitude for their hard work, and they also anticipate tips from clients.
