What Is the Bhasmasur Day Hike?

Bhasmasur Hill, at 2,496 meters, is one of the best hiking destinations in the southern Kathmandu Valley and the third highest hill around Kathmandu. This rewarding day hike offers spectacular panoramic views of the Himalayas, stretching from Annapurna in the west to Mount Everest in the east. From the summit, hikers can also enjoy beautiful views of the Mahabharat range and the Kathmandu Valley, making it one of the finest viewpoint hikes near Kathmandu.

Why Choose the Bhasmasur Hill Hike?

The Bhasmasur Day Hike is more challenging than many other day hikes near Kathmandu, making it ideal for those seeking a more adventurous experience. The trail is steep in parts, with both uphill and downhill sections, but it remains well maintained and less crowded. Along the way, hikers pass through lush forests rich in birdlife and wildlife, creating a peaceful natural escape. As the trail ascends, the views become increasingly impressive, rewarding every step of the journey.

When Is the Best Time for Bhasmasur Day Hiking?

The best time for the Bhasmasur Day Hike is from September to May, especially from October to April, when the weather is pleasant and the mountain views are clearest. Winter is also suitable, though the Kathmandu Valley can sometimes be foggy. In spring, blooming rhododendrons and wildflowers add extra beauty, while the monsoon season from June to August is less suitable due to slippery and overgrown trails.

Trip Itinerary

Bhasmasur Hill Day Hiking Route
The Bhasmasur Hill Day Hike begins with a 7:00 am departure from your hotel in Kathmandu, followed by about an hour’s drive to Machchhegaun. Starting from Pushpa Lal Park, the trail ascends gradually toward Deurali through peaceful natural surroundings before continuing to Bhasmasur Danda, the main highlight of the hike. From the top, enjoy breathtaking views of the Himalayas, green hills, and the Kathmandu Valley. After spending time at the summit, descend to Chhap Danda for a hot local lunch, then continue down to Machchhegaun and drive back to your hotel. This itinerary includes about 6–7 hours of hiking and around one and a half hours of driving.

Alternative Route via Champadevi
For those seeking a longer and more scenic option, the Bhasmasur Hill Day Hike can also be done via Champadevi. After a 7:00 am departure from your hotel, drive for about an hour to near Pharping (Bhanjhyang), where the hike begins. The trail climbs through pine forests and passes Deurali, shrines, and prayer flags before reaching Champadevi and continuing to Bhasmasur Danda.
