Kyajo Ri (6186m) is a stunning-looking Peak located in the Everest Region, Nepal. It’s a technical and challenging climb suitable for physically fit adventurers seeking, an off-the-beaten-path trekking and climbing experience. Blossom Expeditions has designed the perfect mini-expedition for those looking to take on the challenge.
Kyajo Ri Peak was opened for climbing in 2002 by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation and is categorized in the group “A” by the Nepal Mountaineering Association. With a pointed summit and impressive height, Kyajo Ri Peak offers a true alpine expedition experience over a 7-8 day period. This technically demanding climb requires a good level of fitness and determination.
Kyajo Ri Peak Expedition begins with a scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. We trek through the stunning Sherpa villages, following the Dudhkoshi river valley to Gokyo 3rd Lake. The Gokyo Valley is breathtakingly beautiful, and we’ll spend two days exploring and acclimatizing before crossing the Renjo La pass (5360m) into Thame Valley and continuing down to Samde.
From here, we leave the main trekking path and head towards Mende. The route is steep and challenging but offers fantastic views over a couple of passes to camp 1 (5200m) on the edge of a blue pool fed by glacial water. The next day, we’ll continue past glacial lakes and rivers, scrambling over large boulders and creeks to reach camp 2 (5700m) on the edge of a large glacial lake in the shadow of Kyajo Ri. The view of the peak across the lake is breathtaking.
On the following day, we have the option to push for the summit or camp on the South East Col and summit the next day. Getting to the Col requires walking around the lake, across the glacier, and moraine/boulder fields up the pass.
Summit day requires an early start at 2 am. The real climbing begins from the Col where we’ll use crampons and jumar to ascend steep snow and ice. Some sections of the huge rock wall can be iced up, requiring technical climbing skills. However, the reward for reaching Kyajo Ri Peak’s summit is worth it, with stunning views of some of the most popular peaks in the Khumbu region, including some of the world’s highest over 8000m peaks.
After summiting the peak, we can return to Camp 2 or 1 and then trek back to Lukla via Khunde/Namche Bazaar for the flight to Kathmandu. The Kyajo Ri Peak mini-expedition is an unforgettable experience for adventurers seeking a unique and challenging climbing experience in Everest Region.
