Climb the World’s Fifth-Highest Mountain
The Makalu Expedition offers a remote and demanding climbing experience on the world’s fifth-highest mountain in eastern Nepal. Standing at 8,485 meters, Mount Makalu lies in the remote eastern Himalayas along the border of Nepal and Tibet. Famous for its striking pyramid-shaped summit, rugged ridges, deep valleys, and the untouched wilderness of the Makalu Barun National Park, Makalu is an ideal choice for climbers seeking a quieter and more challenging expedition away from crowded commercial routes.
Remote Journey to Makalu Base Camp
After completing the necessary preparations and permits in Kathmandu, the expedition begins with a scenic flight to Tumlingtar, followed by a trek through beautiful villages and the spectacular landscapes of the Makalu Barun Region. The trail passes through traditional settlements such as Chichila, Num, Seduwa, and Tashi gaon, where you can experience the rich local culture, simple mountain lifestyle, and warm hospitality of the communities living in harmony in this remote Himalayan region.
Along the route, trekkers pass through dense rhododendron, pine, oak, and birch forests, deep gorges carved by the Barun River, waterfalls, alpine meadows, glaciers, and rugged mountain terrain. The trail also offers magnificent views of Makalu, Chamlang, Peak 6, Peak 7, Baruntse, and many other snow-covered Himalayan peaks.
Challenging Climb to the Summit of Makalu
After reaching Makalu Base Camp at 4,870 meters, climbers spend several days acclimatizing, practicing, and preparing for the summit push. The expedition involves climbing through multiple high camps across steep snow slopes, rocky ridges, glaciers, and technical alpine terrain.
A successful ascent of Mount Makalu rewards you with stunning 360-degree panoramic views of the Himalayan giants, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, Kanchenjunga, Baruntse, and numerous peaks extending across Nepal and Tibet.
