A Scenic Adventure to Nepal’s Largest Lake
The Jumla Rara Lake Trek is a remarkable journey into the remote Karnali region of western Nepal, offering trekkers a rare blend of untouched wilderness, cultural heritage, and dramatic mountain scenery. As one of Nepal’s finest off-the-beaten-path treks, this adventure is ideal for those seeking a moderately challenging trek away from busy trails. Throughout the journey, trekkers experience pristine landscapes, peaceful forests, and meaningful interactions with local communities, making the Rara Lake Trekking truly unforgettable.
Brief Rara Lake Trek Itinerary
The trek begins with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Surkhet, followed by an adventurous overland drive to Jumla, the gateway to Rara Lake. From Jumla, the trail gradually leads through tranquil forests of pine, rhododendron, spruce, and juniper inside Rara National Park.
The highlight of the trek is Rara Lake (2,960m), the largest and deepest lake in Nepal, often called the “Queen of Far-West Nepal.” Surrounded by green hills and snow-capped peaks, the lake offers stunning reflections and a peaceful atmosphere ideal for exploration and relaxation.
After spending time around the lake and hiking to viewpoints such as Murma Top, the return journey follows a different route through high alpine meadows, remote villages, and scenic passes. Trekkers cross Ghurchi Lagna (3,445m) and Danphe Lagna (3,690m) before returning to Jumla. Along the way, breathtaking landscapes and traditional village life provide a deep insight into the culture of western Nepal.
Rich Flora, Fauna, and Cultural Encounters
Established in 1976, Rara National Park is home to diverse wildlife, including Himalayan black bear, musk deer, goral, Himalayan thar, and wild boar. Birdlife is especially abundant, making this trek rewarding for birdwatchers, particularly in November and April during migration seasons.
Culturally, the trek passes through historic settlements such as Cherechaur, Sinja, Bhota, Jhyari, Bhulbhule, and Chautha, where trekkers experience authentic rural life, local traditions, and warm hospitality. Blossom Expeditions carefully designs this route as a full circuit trek, ensuring both scenic and cultural richness throughout the journey.
Best Time to Trek to Rara Lake
Although the Jumla Rara Lake Trek is possible year-round, the best seasons are autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May). During these months, weather conditions are stable, temperatures are moderate, and mountain views are clear, making trekking more comfortable and rewarding.
Autumn offers crisp air, clear skies, and vibrant landscapes after the monsoon, creating ideal trekking conditions.
Winter (December–February) is colder, with occasional snowfall, but it remains possible with proper gear. Fewer trekkers and snow-covered scenery provide a peaceful experience.
Spring brings blooming wildflowers, including rhododendrons, along with active wildlife and farming scenes, adding color and life to the trail.
Perfect for All Trekkers
Suitable for both first-time and experienced trekkers with reasonable fitness, the Rara Lake Trek is moderately challenging and less crowded, ensuring a peaceful Himalayan experience. With well-planned logistics and camping-based trekking, Blossom Expeditions ensures a safe, immersive, and memorable journey to Nepal’s most beautiful lake.
