A Sacred Himalayan Trek in the Manaslu Region
The Tsum Valley–Manaslu Larkya Pass Trek is one of the most rewarding and spiritually rich treks in Nepal. Located about 100 km northwest of Kathmandu in the northern Gorkha District, this restricted trekking region requires a special permit, helping preserve its pristine landscapes and authentic culture. Opened to trekkers in 1992, the area offers an exclusive adventure through remote valleys and traditional Tibetan-influenced settlements.
Tsum Valley Trek: Culture, Monasteries, and Landscapes
Tsum Valley, derived from the Tibetan word “Tsombo” (vivid colors), is known for its dramatic scenery and sacred heritage. Surrounded by the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges, the valley features striking geological formations, alpine terrain, and peaceful, picturesque villages.
The trail passes ancient mani walls, stupas, and important monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, Dephu Doma Nunnery, and Milarepa Cave (Gompa), reflecting deep-rooted Buddhist traditions. The local people, primarily of Tibetan origin, maintain unique customs and celebrate festivals like Lhosar, Dhacyhang, and Saka Dawa.
Tsum Valley & Larkya La Pass Experience
The trek begins at Machhakhola, following the Budhi Gandaki River through terraced farmlands and traditional villages. After Jagat, the route enters the Siyar River Valley toward Tsum Valley, reaching Mu Gompa before rejoining the Manaslu Circuit trail.
Continuing toward Larkya La Pass (5,160 m), the landscape opens to breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, including Mount Manaslu. Crossing this dramatic high pass is the trek’s ultimate highlight, offering stunning views of surrounding peaks. The descent follows the Marsyangdi River Valley beneath the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges, completing this unforgettable journey.
