Sacred Dudhakunda Lake Trek Highlights

The journey begins in Kathmandu, followed by a scenic overland drive to Dhap, the starting point of the trek. From here, the trail follows historic trade routes connecting Jiri and Okhaldhunga. Along the way, you visit Jhapre Gumba (2,820m), a hilltop monastery offering impressive Himalayan views, before continuing northeast to Pikey Base Camp via Lhamje Danda.

Early the next morning, the trail ascends to the summit of Pikey Peak (4,065 m)—one of the finest viewpoints in Lower Solukhumbu. From the top, enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of the Annapurna, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gaurishankar, Numbur Himal, Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga ranges. After descending, the trek leads east toward Junbesi, a beautiful Sherpa village known for its terraced fields, pine forests, traditional monasteries, mani walls, and well-preserved settlements. The scenic Junbesi Valley is a cultural highlight of the trek.

Dudhakunda Lake and Spiritual Encounters

Continuing onward, the trail passes through the renowned Thupten Chholing Monastery, home to more than 800 nuns and monks. Founded in 1960 by His Holiness Kabje Thrulshik Rinpoche, this monastery remains a major spiritual center in Solukhumbu. From here, the trek ascends to a series of sacred alpine lakes, culminating at Dudhakunda Lake (4,560m)—a revered milky-white lake set beneath dramatic mountain walls, offering a deeply peaceful atmosphere.

Throughout the trek, you are rewarded with views of some of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Thamserku, Numbur, Gauri Sankar, Langtang Lirung, Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Annapurna.
