Explore Sacred Valleys and Majestic Himalayan Peaks
The Tsum Valley–Manaslu Larke Pass Trekking offers one of the most rewarding and spiritually rich trekking experiences in Nepal. Located about 100 kilometers northwest of Kathmandu in the northern Gorkha District, these sacred Himalayan valleys remained closed to foreign trekkers until 1992. As a restricted trekking area, the Manaslu region requires a special permit, helping preserve its pristine landscapes and cultural authenticity while offering an exclusive Himalayan adventure.
Renowned for tranquil trails, traditional Tibetan settlements, and dramatic mountain scenery, the Manaslu and Tsum Valley region is a perfect blend of nature and culture. The combination of the Tsum Valley Trek and the Manaslu Larke Pass Trek showcases spectacular Himalayan ranges, glaciers, alpine lakes, and diverse flora and fauna, making it an increasingly sought-after destination for serious trekkers.
Sacred Tsum Valley: Culture and Landscapes
Situated in northern Gorkha, Tsum Valley is a sacred Himalayan valley whose name comes from the Tibetan word “Tsombo,” meaning “vivid colors.” Its colorful geological formations and dramatic landscapes create striking scenery throughout the trek. Historically known as “Tsum Tso Chucksums”—meaning thirteen provinces ruled as one—the valley is surrounded by the Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal ranges.
This peaceful valley is rich in ancient art, religion, and culture. The trail passes hundreds of carved Mani walls and stupas, along with important monasteries such as Mu Gompa, Rachen Gompa, Dephu Doma Nunnery, and Milarepa Gompa, reflecting the region’s deep-rooted Buddhist heritage.
Unique Culture and Traditions
The people of Tsum Valley and Manaslu are primarily of Tibetan origin, speaking their own dialect and practicing unique traditions, including polyandry. Festivals such as Lhosar, Dhacyhang, and Saka Dawa are colorful celebrations that highlight the area’s vibrant cultural identity.
Tsum Valley Manaslu Larke Pass Trek’s Brief Itinerary
Tsum Valley Route
The trek begins at Machhakhola, reached by a 7–8 hour drive from Kathmandu or Pokhara. Following the Budhi Gandaki River, the trail passes through Chhetri, Brahmin, and Gurung villages with terraced farmlands. After Jagat, the valley gradually opens, offering views of Sringi Himal. From Nyak Phedi, the trail turns northeast into the Siyar River Valley, leading deep into Tsum Valley and up to Mu Gompa. The return route reconnects with the main Manaslu trail at Nyak Phedi.
Manaslu Larke Pass route
Continuing toward the Manaslu Larke Pass, the landscape widens with sweeping Himalayan panoramas. The trail climbs steadily to Larkya La Pass (5,160m), one of Nepal’s most dramatic high passes. After crossing, the descent leads into the forested Marsyangdi River Valley, framed by the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges, before reaching the road.
