A Journey into the Last Forbidden Kingdom and a Tibetan Cultural Paradise
Join the Tiji Festival Upper Mustang Tour for a rare opportunity to explore the deeply rooted Tibetan Buddhist culture of Nepal and visit the legendary Last Forbidden Kingdom of Lo. The Tiji Festival, held annually in Lo Manthang, is a sacred three-day religious celebration known as “The Chasing of the Demons.” It is one of the most important spiritual events for the people of the Upper Mustang region.
The origin of the Tiji Festival is linked to the legend of Dorje Jono (Dorje Shunu), a revered deity who fought against his demon father to save Mustang from destruction. According to the legend, the demon caused severe water shortages in this arid land, leading to crop failure and the loss of livestock. Eventually, Dorje Jono defeated and banished the demon, restoring peace, balance, and prosperity to the region.
The Tiji Festival is believed to have begun during the time of Lama Lowo Khenchen (1456–1532) and is considered one of the oldest festivals of Lo Manthang. During the celebrations, villagers gather to pray for the well-being and good fortune of the entire valley. Monks wear traditional, colorful costumes and sacred masks, performing ritual dances that symbolize the victory of good over evil and the expulsion of negative forces.
Explore the Hidden Treasures of Upper Mustang
Although the Upper Mustang region was opened to foreigners in 1992, it remains largely untouched and unspoiled, offering a rare glimpse into a society that has remained unchanged for centuries. Due to strict government regulations, travel to this remote area is limited and special permits are required, costing USD 500 per person for ten days. Visiting Upper Mustang during the Tiji Festival is therefore an exceptionally rewarding experience, combining extraordinary cultural depth with dramatic Himalayan landscapes.
